This crystal-shaped inclusion, called a negative crystal, formed naturally as the ruby grew. Its sharp, well-defined shape is one of the features gemologists look for when identifying unheated rubies.

The image above shows a dense cluster of fine, hair-like needle inclusions (rutile silk), which is commonly associated with unheated rubies.

Under magnification, this unheated Mozambique ruby shows intact rutile needle inclusions together with natural growth structures. These features formed during the crystal’s growth and remain unchanged, which is important because heat treatment typically alters or dissolves them. Gemologists use such internal characteristics to help identify rubies that have not been heat treated.
